Mezon Tapas Dining

“Dining For A Cause” presented by the Mezon Tapas Bar & Restaurant, was a very special event. The tasting menu included seven courses, each paired from a selection of excellent Spanish wines. The servers were courteous, professional, and efficient in presenting the wonderful meal. I look forward to returning for paella, and I highly recommend Mezon Tapas Bar & Restaurant to anyone within an hour drive of Danbury, Connecticut.

The purpose of “Dining For A Cause” was to provide support to the Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN) Global Health Program (GHP). The vision for  the GHP, as described by Dr. John Murphy, the WCHN CEO, is to enable staff physicians to visit other countries and bring back valuable knowledge that ultimately benefits patients in the local area. The specific beneficiary of the “Dining For A Cause” event was a small 32-bed hospital in the Dominican Republic. David Luther, executive director of the Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo Integral (IDDI) said that a key goal of the health programs in the country is to promote a culture of health prevention with the active participation of the low-income communities. I thought Dr. Majid Sadigh, director of the global health program at WCHN, summed it up quite well when he said that faculty, staff, and students can expand their medical knowledge through visits to other countries. Cultural competence and humanism in medicine can deepen core values such as love, respect, and empathy toward patients. A global perspective on healthcare can provide collaboration for the benefit of patients locally and around the world.

The owners of the restaurant, the Reyes family, have been in the restaurant business for more than 25 years.  They generously donated the entire proceeds of the evening to the hospital in the Dominican Republic. Thirteen members of the staff donated their time to serving the seven course dinner. It was a memorable evening for all that highlighted the importance of healthcare and thinking globally.
